Orlando's '67 Days Of Smiles' travel promotion
For the past three days, 10 pairs of travel enthusiasts have been in Orlando, Florida, vying to win that city’s 67 Days of Smiles competition. The winners will spend 67 consecutive days in Orlando beginning on August 27. They’ll be expected to sample every possible local attraction and to promote their daily escapades through media interviews and via social media channels such as Facebook and Twitter. Sound familiar? That’s because it’s part of the latest trend in travel promotion: have a public competition for a dream job publicizing a travel destination and then give the winner responsibility for whipping up enthusiasm through social media outlets. During the application phase, the destination benefits from oodles of publicity from newspapers and television. After all, it’s a great hook and a fun story. The Orlando winners will not only get to spend more than two months at theme parks, spas and golf courses in central Florida, but they’ll receive the use of a two-bedroom condo in Orlando and $25,000 that they can use to cover living expenses back home. “I think this is a brilliant way for the Orlando Convention and Visitors Bureau to spend some of its marketing budget,” said Bryce Plank, who is one of the finalists along with his brother, Brendan.
